YES u can, i was able to with patience and timing, pet my hamster on the head (syrian hamster that is, or also known as a teddy bear hamster) within 3 days of purchase, but u need to start at the back, on the sides of the body and over the few days move the touch higher towards the neck, and the best time to pet the head initially is when giving them a super tasty treat, i tamed mine with nature valley granola bars, just a pinky nail sized cube ( thats like 1/4 or 25% the size of a SUGAR CUBE, make sure no chocolate, if there is, pick it out and make sure theres no residual chocolate on the granola, and while the hamster is eating it, pet the back, side and neck and then just the lowest part of the head, and then slide the finger up the head and pet it gently (by that i mean don't lift the finger away from the head) its more like a rub, not a pet, and over the course of the day, repeat with anything, pellets, seeds esp sunflower seeds and hand it to them, wait for them to take it and either eat or stuff it in their pouches, and thats the best time to touch them, they are preoccupied, mine was so quick to tame, and potty trained 100% success by day 8!

tasty honey cheerios works well , they love it, just make sure its no more than 4 a day, and only syrians, some hamsters are prone ( meaning they are very likely to develop) Diabetes, (thats due to sugar foods) but that doesn't mean syrians should be fed lots of sugary stuff it just means u don't have to worry AS MUCH, cucumbers is the #1 thing i would use, they love it more than anything, and it takes them a while to eat, always approach by touch from down low, never from above, and let them see the hand COMING, oh cucumber, slice thats as thin as possible is perfect

  • Like all living creatures, hamsters are capable of experiencing a number of ailments as they age. Although strokes are not common, they do occur among the hamster community, mostly during the evening hours when the hamster is very active, according to the Popular Pets website. Some hamsters may recover from a stroke quite rapidly on their own, but others may need assistance from their owner for several weeks.

Head Tilt
  • One of the most common symptoms exhibited by rodents that have had a stroke is the presence of a head tilt. Not to be confused by an ear infection, the head tilt is usually a permanent side effect of the stroke, according to the Pet-Zone website. Hamsters can live with a head tilt as long as more severe physical and behavioral changes are not present.

Running in Circles
  • The neurological damage that accompanies a stroke can cause mental confusion and a loss of equilibrium in the hamster. Hamsters that have had a stroke are often seen walking or running in circles and, in more extreme cases, falling over repeatedly. Removing common items, like exercise wheels and wooden toys, from the hamster's habitat will help prevent more injury.

Paralysis
  • Similar to cases of human stroke, hamsters may experience paralysis after suffering a stroke. Only time will tell if the paralysis will be permanent or not, and it may take several weeks before the hamster is up and moving around again on its own, according to the Hamsterific web site's illness guide. Until that time, it may be necessary for the owner to hand-feed and water the hamster so that it does not become malnourished and/or dehydrated.

Warning Signs
  • Prior to the actual stroke, the hamster may exhibit sudden and extreme exhaustion, potentially collapsing after some activity. The hamster may also suddenly become very still and appear to be in a trance-like state, staring into the distance and not responding to its surroundings.

My hamster has recently had a stroke and she doesn't use half her body and she keeps on falling over. ;(

My hamster keeps shivering and won't get up is he ok?

Heat Stroke (or Sleeper's Disease as it is sometimes known) occurs when the temperature is too high. The hamster lies flat on the cage floor, is limp and may tremble when touched. Often the hamster will show some movement if you blow on it but if this does not revive it, the hamster should be placed in cooler area and allowed to gradually cool down. If the hamster shows no improvement within a few moments it may be necessary to gently spray the hamster with a fine mist of cool water. If the hamster still shows no improvement within a few moments urgent veterinary advice should be sought. A hamster should never be placed near a window or left in a car on a warm day as these are the most common cause heat stroke. A hamster suffering from heat stroke may also become dehydrated
