It is more than likely the person was born with it. Other causes can be that they have had some horrendous traumatic event occur in their life and they are uncomfortable or cannot display nor engage in emotional connections with people and/or animals. Some forms of torture/abuse can cause people to become this way, while people may disassociate and have identity disorders, some do not and just mute their emotions as a defense mechanism. To treat these people as mental illness would be a mistake, much of what they do to these types of people borders on torture for them, all over again. In other words, do not victimize them twice.

By the way, this answer is coming from someone that was born with it. From what I understand, my problem stems from a neurological disorders, a problem in the brain wiring (if you will) and not a psychological (thought process) factor per se, although it appears that way to other people.

Perhaps this will give you some insight. Professionals will give you their thoughts on it, ask someone that has the problem and perhaps you get a completely different angle.

I must say, I am envious of people that can feel the full range of emotions, let alone the depth and breadth of them.
