What causes excessive oil consumption in Ford Expedition?

For a while Ford had a problem with engines using too much oil. I do not know why, but the rings weren't sealing in the cylinder bores like they should. My uncle, and others I know had these same problems. He bought a brand new truck. From the beginning it used at least 2 quarts of oil every 3,000 miles. Ford kept telling him it would go away. At 60,000 miles....when he sold it, it was still using as much or more oil. Provided there are no oil leaks, ring seal or valve guides are probably the most logical conclusion. Bad valve guides will give you a tell tale sign by the engine puffing blue smoke on initial start up after sitting overnight.
