Fireflies have an organ that lights up due to a chemical reaction inside their body, the sole catalyst to the reaction being oxygen. When oxygen is drawn into the body through the complex series of tubes in the firefly's body (as they do not have lungs), it is exposed to the chemicals in the firefly's light organ and creates the reaction, causing the firefly to light up. When the firefly wishes to cease the reaction, it stops drawing in oxygen and the reaction stops, causing the light to fade.
