There are a number of different possible causes of severe constipation. Lack of fiber in the diet is the most common reason. There are many dietary sources of fiber, including fresh fruit and vegetables, beans, and whole wheat or bran. But some people manage to devise diets which are deficient in fiber. If all you eat is maccaroni and cheese, you are going to get into trouble. You can take Metamucil as a fiber supplement, if needed. Speaking of cheese, that is another source of constipation. Cheese is what is known as a binding agent. It tends to make the fecal matter more solid, and as a result, it may become too solid to easily move through your bowels, if your cheese consumption is excessive. Finally, there can be blockages in your bowels which prevent the normal movement of food and food residue. Bowel cancer can result in tumors which grow into the space through which food would otherwise be moving. This is the most difficult cause of constipation, since it requires very elaborate medical treatment, rather than merely a change of diet. With any luck, your problem is not that serious.
