∙ 12y agoThere may be many causes of pain in lower part on back of the head those can be broadly divided into Skeletal, Neurological, Neoplastic, Infective and miscellaneous. One of the most common causes seen in middle aged/elderly population is cervical spondylosis. Pain coming from facet joints (small flat joints located in back portion of vertebra) from upper cervical (neck) vertebrae may be referred to back of head. Irritation of upper cervical nerve roots from prolapsed disc, tumors is known to be felt in back of head. Atlantoaxial instability (joint between first two neck vertebrae) has been proposed as a cause of vague back of the head and neck pain due to altered biomechanics. Posterior fossa tumors of the brain located in the back portion of the skull are included as neoplastic (cancer) causes. To conclude, local superficial infections of skin and subcutaneous tissues and inflammation of the lymph nodes would be some other more obvious causes.
