I am assuming this is one of the Science Award Trust Questions. Well my answer for this was:

There is an ozone hole over Antarctica which has grown so large it reaches southern parts of Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Argentina and South Africa. Also New Zealand's Ozone layer is very thin so the sun takes a shorter time to burn us compared to other areas of the world.

Sun burn can be prevented by avoiding sun exposure between 10am-2pm, Wearing protective clothing and wide brimmed hats and by regularly applying sunscreen.

Sunburn is permanent. The long term dangers of sun burn are premature aging skin and wrinkling, brown spots and freckles, development of premalignant lesions and development of skin cancer.
