There is an ozone hole over Antarctica which has grown so large it reaches southern parts of Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Argentina and South Africa. Also New Zealand's Ozone layer is very thin so the sun takes a shorter time to burn us compared to other areas of the world.
Sun burn can be prevented by avoiding sun exposure between 10am-2pm, Wearing protective clothing and wide brimmed hats and by regularly applying sunscreen.

In general, it is ultraviolet light (the UV ray) that causes sunburn. Ultraviolet light is of a higher frequency than visible light, which means shorter wavelength, and higher energy. UV rays tend to do some tissue damage and burn skin causing sunburn.
Weathering and erosion cant be controlled or prevented as they are natural causes.
An exposure substantial enough to result in a mild sunburn will be followed by melanin producing a tan that may last a few weeks.
