In the UK, if you hold the number 9 for 5-15 seconds, it will automatically dial 999, the emergency number, whether your phone is locked or not.
There may be a similar feature for other countries.
You should invest in a case for your phone that covers the back and front, to protect it from accidental damage and from pressing keys accidentally.
