There are four key characteristics to chordates. They are the presence of a notochord, the presence of a hollow nerve cord that is dorsal to the notochord, pharyngeal pouches and an endostyle.
All chordates had at some stage of development a dorsal nerve cord, a notochord, and gill slits. That includes all vertebrates and certain marine animals, such as the lancelets; small, flattened marine organisms, structurally similar to the vertebrates but having a notochord rather than a true vertebral column.

All chordates have a hollow nerve cord, a notochord, pharyngeal pouches, and a postanal tail. Some examples of chordates are humans, eagles, turtles, and jellyfish.
Just think of any property that you don't have and your dog or a tree does't. There you go. E.g. a tail, chlorophyll... You probably should be more specific.
