There are a few different answers. For the Lewis acid base theory, an acid is an electron acceptor. A Bonsted-Lowry acid is one which donates Hydrogen ions.

There's a third called a Arrhenius acid, which increases the concentration of hydronium ions, but the Bronsted-Lowry and Lewis are the two most commonly taught.
