A Bay horse has a chestnut gene and a black gene, and a gene that restricts the black to the mane and tail.

A palomino is a chestnut horse with 2 chestnut genes, and a gene that dilutes the chestnut from red to gold.

A palomino only carries one dilution, so will only throw it 50% of the time.

Roaning is a pattern, and not actually related to color.

A bay roan is really a bay when talking about color.

A bay will throw black 50% of the time, and chestnut 50% of the time. Add the dilution of palomino to the mix and you have a 25% chance each of:

  • palomino
  • chestnut
  • bay or black (depending if the restriction gene is carried)
  • grullo

Whether or not the roaning pattern will be carried depends on the type of roan. If it is a dominant roan, it will carry 50% of the time. If it is a recessive roan, it will carry the gene over every breeding, but requires a recessive roan gene from both pairs to result in the pattern color. Roans are often recessive, which is why they are often throwbacks (neither parent is roan, but results in a roan foal).

The black horse is either aaEe or aaEE

The bay horse could be AaEe AAEe AaEE AAEE

If the bay horse is AAEE any colt produced will be bay. If the bay horse is AA at the Agouti site there can be no black foal from this mating. If the either horse is EE no chestnut foals can be produced. If the bay horse carries the black allele and the foal is Ee or EE there is a 50% chance that the foal will be black. If both parents carry the recessive (Extension) allele e there is a 25% chance that the colt will be chestnut regardless of the genetic information at the Agouti site. If either or both of the parents have a chestnut parent they are Ee at the extension site. Genetic testing for the Agouti and Extension sites is easy, relatively inexpensive and it would make the probable color of the expected foal very clear.

It depends on the genes that both the mother and father have. Really, there are so many variables that its impossible to tell exactly what color the foal will be.

i don't think there is a way to tell. expect any.

What color foal do you get when you breed a chestnut mare to a red roan?

You are likely to get a chestnuty/bay colour I think.

Are horses the color roan?

"A roan is a color of horse, so some horses are roan, but the color of a horse depends highly upon the breed of horse. It is possible to determine the color of a foal before he/she is born by comparing the coats of the dam (mother) and the sire (father), also by looking at the previous foals of each." Roan is NOT a color. The color of horses does not depend on their breed. Many breeds can have any color at all. Roan is a scattering of white hairs though the body of a horse giving it a "salt and pepper" look. It can happen on any color horse, although it's not going to be as visible on lighter colors like grays or paler palominos.

What color horse will you get if you breed a strawberry roan stallion with a blue roan mare?

If either horse is homozygous for roan the foal will be roan, if both are heterozygous there is a 75% chance that the foal will be roan. If by strawberry roan you mean the stallion is a bay roan as opposed to a chestnut roan, we can surmise that the stallion is Rn-A-E- The mare is Rn-aaE- The base color of the foal, without regard to whether it is roan is as follows If the stallion or mare is EE at the extension site they will produce either a bay or black foal...since the stallion is bay he could be AA (only bay foals) or Aa which will produce 50-50 bay or black with this mare. If both the mare and the stallion are Ee at the extension site there is a 25% chance of a chestnut foal.

Can a roan bull and a roan cow have a red and white cattle?

A roan bull and a roan cow can indeed breed to have red and white cattle. This is due to alleles mixing.

When roan color in cattle is the result of incomplete dominance between red and white color genes how would one produce a herd of pure breeding roan colored cattle?

It's simply not possible. When you breed a roan cow to a roan bull you only have a 50% chance of producing roan offspring, a 25% chance of producing white offspring and a 25% chance of producing red offspring. You have a much higher chance of producing a pure breeding red or white herd than a roan-coloured herd.

What two horses create a blue roan?

It's not necessarily which two 'horses' create a blue roan color as Blue roan is just that a color and not a breed, therefore any two horses with the correct genetics can create a foal with blue roan coloring. Roan is a modifying gene that affects a horses base color. A blue roans base color is black. Both parents should be black and one should at least carry the roan gene. If a horse is Heterozygous for roan (Rr) then it has a 50/50 chance of passing along the roan gene. If one of the parents was Homozygous for roan (RR) then it will pass it along 100% of the time. Homozygous roans are hard to find though. However you can increase your odds of getting a blue roan foal by breeding two blue roans together. There used to be an old theory that said breeding two homozygous roans together would cause the fetus to die in -utero, however this has been disproved. Remember color breeding is not an exact science and you can get any number of colors based on the parents genetics. Also breeding strictly for color is typically detrimental to a breed as color can sometimes become favored over correct conformation.

When roan color in cattle is the result of incomplete dominance between red and white color genes how would one produce a herd of pure-breeding roan-colored cattle?

Genetics is a tricky thing and there are no 100% guarantees that you will get the color you want. That being said the best possible way that this might be achieved would to test the genetics of each breeding pair. And continue to breed a successful pair, but have a care not to over breed them. A roan will not necessarily produce another roan either. Any born not of the color you want test to make sure of the genetics and decide to keep and breed or sell. It would take years of careful screening, breeding, trials and errors and disappointments. But with patience and persistence I believe that it would be possible. :)

What color horse would you get if you breed a chestnut to a bay roan?

Bay could be AaEE AaEe AAEE or AAEe the roan component could be RnRn or Rnrn. The color of the parents and grandparents may help the breeder determine if the parent could be homozygous for Rn, A. The chestnut parent is --ee. Again the color of the parents and grandparents may help determine the genetics of this parent at the agouti site. If the bay roan parent is AaEeRnrn and the chestnut parent is Aaee 25% chance of chestnut roan 25% chance of chestnut 12.5 % chance of black 12.5% chance of black roan 12.5 % chance of bay 12.5% chance of bay roan

What does a roan look like?

Roan is a coat colouration where red hair is mixed in with white hair, and occurs in livestock such as horses and cattle. Shorthorns are one breed of cattle that typically comes in roan colouration.

What colour is roan?

There can be a blue roan, a bay roan, and a red roan. A roan is a horse with a regular coat colour with white hairs sprinkled without it. Red roans and bay roans are very similar in colour, but they are still different. I love roans and they truly are beautiful horses.A red roan: http://www.barrelracer.com/Dusty%20Gildner/red%20roan%20filly.jpgA bay roan: http://www.holderquarterhorses.com/marthas-six-moon-colt-3.jpgA blue roan: http://www.horsemadness.com/poco3.jpg
