Why does green light give a low rate of photosynthesis?

The question is in regard to leafs, as my resident teenager just had the same homework. It is poorly worded, as it should be asking, "Why does a leaf exhibit a low oxygen flow when illuminated only by green light" ...or something along those lines. In simple terms, chlorophyll feeds the plant by converting light and CO2 into 'food' and O2. A lack of oxygen means that this chemical reaction isn't occurring. Why? A lack of light. The chlorophyll is green because it primarily reflects green and yellow light, meaning that it absorbs (and uses) the reds and blues. Shining a green light on a plant is almost the same as not shining any light on it.

What are the colors that you see when you look at a green leaf?

red, orange, and yellow but some leaves die and turn brown......or some just stay green

What happens when white light reflects from a white paper?

The surface will look Red, because white reflects all colours and absorb none. If you hit a red light on, say, green then that would look black because green will absorb all the red but if it was a green light then it would look green. Every colour, except white, absorbs colours except itselves.

What color does light green and light pink make?

If you combine mint green and light pink you will have a light, warm, muddy color. Mint green is a tint of the color green, and light pink is a tint of the color red. These two colors are complimentary, which means that they have little to no pigments in common. When combined they contain too many pigments, so none of them will dominate the others and the color will look murky.

Chlorophyll is a pigment that absorbs all colors of light INCLUDING green, which is mostly reflected, but somewhat absorbed. The reflected green light hits our eyes, and the plants appear green. Don't even ask about what happens in your eyes to SEE green.

Why does chlorophyll make a plant look green?

You may not know it, but sunlight is actually a mixture of all the colors of the rainbow. Chlorophyll absorbs most of colors in light but not green. plants look green because chlorophyll reflects green light.

Why does green look green in white light?

the white light has many colours in it. this is called the spectrum. as the plant is green, it absorbs all the colours except green. green reflects off the plant, into our eyes and we see a green plant. the same would work with any object that reflects its own colour and no more. white objects reflect all light and black objects reflect no light.

If object is white in sunlight what color will it be in green light?

If an object is white in sunlight it will be green in green light. A white object reflects all wavelengths (colors) of light that shine on it. If only green light shines on it, that color will be reflected and the object will look green.

When green light goes into a prism what color light comes out of the prism?

Green for certain. Beyond that it's hard to say, really. The light may look green but contain small amounts of other colors as well.
