river looses velocity, and deposits it's load (river looses velocity when it enters a river or lake) heavy material is deposited first and silt last.

for a delta to be formed there must be deposition of sediments and distribution channels.

delta are formed when the river deposits it alluvium at the mouth of the river and then the river forced to split.
