the chemical in which an electrical current can pass through have to have ionic bonds holding its components together. Salt water is the simplest example of this. it is highly polar with its sodium and chlorine ions freely floating in the water and water itself is very polar with the large oxygen molecule delivering equal charge in opposition to the hydrogens so all the little molecules in salt water line right up like iron in a magnet

Electrolytes are ions in solution. The human body has lots of electrolytes in blood, plasma, and interstitial fluid (the fluid between cells). Most electrolytes in the body are sodium ions (Na+). The electrolytes in sodium chloride (NaCl) are sodium ions (NaK) and chlorine ions (ClL). Electrolytes are essential to a healthy body because they are what the cells that make up nerves, the heart, and muscles use to carry electrical impulses.

Free ions. Negative ions have one extra electron, positive ions are missing an electron. Negative ions give up their extra electron easily. Positive ions try to fill their electron shell. I understand the basics, this could probably be expanded to several paragraphs.

Electricity is the flow of charges. Many minerals and gases will readily dissolve in water. It is the presence of this minerals and gases that allow water to conduct electricity. Perfectly pure water without these impurities will not conduct electricity. This is why salt water is a good conductor of electricity.
