We built up the national interstate freeway system, which created jobs and improved interstate travel and tourism, and created a demand for more automobiles. This led to a vast number of other jobs and opportunities. In all, there were a lot of jobs that were paying a good, living wage, and there was opportunity aplenty for Americans.
