What to take for cough syrup while on warfarin?

This might actually seem like a strange answer. I just thought I'd warn you before answering.

Anytime I feel a sore throat or cough coming on, I take a spoonful of coconut oil as often as I can stand it (once an hour to once every fifteen minutes, just a matter of how much you can handle). You'll know when you've had enough because it will almost seem repulsive when you put it in your mouth. You will, however, actually enjoy the taste until you've had enough. Some brands have almost no taste; others will have a strong coconut taste. You will have to experiment a little to find a taste that you prefer. I personally don't care as long as it does the job for me!

Why coconut oil? It's anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. So whatever the cause of the cough, it will work against it. Also, it has a low melt temperature. So you can either let it melt in your mouth and then let it coat your throat as you swallow it, or you can melt it on low heat and drink it. It may seem to cause you to cough a little more initially as it breaks up the mucus; but you will quickly notice that it stops the coughing.

Because coconut oil is a food, it will not have any "counterindications" with any medications that you might be taking. It is also one of the few oils that will not be changed by heat at least within the range that most of us would use it for cooking.

The Pacific islanders have been using coconut, its milk and oil for centuries.

There are many foods you should avoid while on blood thinners, especially foods rich in Vitamin K. other medications may also inhibit you from eating certain foods.

It would depend on the type of cough. If it was a dry hacking cough, dextromethorphan is recommended. If it is a wet cough with stuff coming out, use guaifenisin with lots of water. When buying over the counter products, check the active ingredients to make sure there are not other ingredients in there that will interact with warfarin. If you have questions, ask your pharmacist or doctor to confirm the safety of the medication.
