Iridium can form alloys with copper.
Iridium is a very rare element in Earth's crust, however rocks that have an age equal to that of the K-T boundary are significantly enriched in iridium. It is theorised that this enrichment is due to the impact of an asteroid with Earth (as asteroids are rich in iridium and the resultant massive explosion spread iridium enriched debris all over the world). This asteroid impact is thought to have been a significant event in the mass extinction even that wiped out the dinosaurs. This is known as the Alverez hypothesis. For more information, please see the related link.
Iridium is a superconductor. As a result it probably is not magnetizable in the same sense as is iron. Substances that are capable of holding a permanent magnetic field usually are not superconductors.
Aerogel, i think. It may be hydrogen.
The Geologic time scale is how they are sure of which is found in the world In Asia they find a red clay deposit under a iron ore deposit In Africa they find a iridium-rich deposit under a red clay deposit In Canada they find this sequence: iron ore, red clay, iridium-rich In Europe they find red clay, iridium-rich, marble, granite When they piece together all of these sequences from around the world until they find a specific pattern in this example: iron ore, red clay, iridium-rich, marble, granite. However sometimes erosion or a drought or some other freak of nature happens that slightly changes the pattern.
The name "Iridium" originates from the Latin word "iris," meaning rainbow, due to the variety of colors its compounds can produce.
