All but one of the IOC's 205 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) are represented in Beijing. The exception is Brunei which was excluded from the Beijing Olympics shortly ahead of the opening ceremony because it failed to register its athletes in time.
The number of countries represented is a slightly tricker question to answer as not all NOCs represent sovereign nations. There are 13 NOCs which are not United Nations members and that are either overseas territories of UN members or special administrative regions. These are: American Samoa, Aruba, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Cook Islands, Guam, Hong Kong, Netherlands Antillies, Palestinian Territories, Puerto Rico, United States Virgin Islands and Taiwan (Chinese Taipei).
If this teams are excluded from the calculation then there are 191 countries represented in Beijing.
