The Slovak koruna

was the official currency of Slovakia until January 2009, when, after five years of EU membership, the country adopted the organization's currency as well. The koruna,

or crown, entered circulation in 1993, and consisted of 5 types of coin and 7 types of banknote.

Before 1993, Slovakia was part of Czechoslovakia, which had its own Czechoslovak koruna

until the Czech Republic and Slovakia separated, leaving both with their own separate korunas,

which the Czech republic still uses to date.
