On the 22 Sept 1862 Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation prohibiting slavery in the Confederacy (those states that were in favour of slavery) as of the 1 Jan 1883. After the Civil War ended three amendments to the Constitution were added, which gave freedom to the former slaves in the US.
XIII Amendment says:
Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
Ratification was completed on the 6 December,1865.
XIV and XV Amendments also deal with slavery but they were issued later (9 July 1868 and 3 February 1870 respectively), so I guess you can take the date of the ratification of the XIII Amendment as the end of slavery in the US.
