To this day there remains some mystery about the death and cremation/burial of Hitler because the Soviets were so secretive about it, but what I have read in several sources is this:
On April 29, 1945, Hitler finally married his long time mistress, Eva Braun. On April 30, Hitler and Eva took leave of everyone else who remained in the Führerbunker with them, including Joseph Goebbels, his wife and children (all of whom later died in the bunker), Martin Bormann and Hitler's private secretary, Traudl Junge, who survived the war and is one major source for most of the information on Hitler's death.
Hitler had his German Shepherd, Blondi, poisoned with a cyanide capsule to insure that the capsule would work. Then Hitler and Eva Braun retired to a room, closed the door, and not long after a shot was heard. After waiting a short time, one of the aides opened the door and found that Hitler had shot himself in the head with his Walther PPK, as well as biting down on the cyanide capsule. He was dead. Eva Braun was also dead, but had only poisoned herself with cyanide. She was not shot.
The bodies were, as part of Hitler's last request, taken outside the entrance to the Führerbunker, placed in a shell hole, had gasoline poured on them and set afire. But the Soviet shelling was so intense that the aides were driven back inside and the bodies were not completely consumed.
When the Soviets reached the Reich Chancellery they reportedly found the incompletely burned bodies and did an autopsy, using dental records to confirm that the man was Hitler. After that the story gets really murky, with the Soviets being very secretive about what happened next for reasons that to this day are not well understood. Supposedly the Russians still have a fragment of Hitler's skull, although its authenticity is disputed and cannot be proved.
