If I'm not mistaken, the first microwave unit was built in the Motorola labs while experimenting on a new radio technology.
The person working on the device got too close to the magnetron (the microwave tube) and had a Hershey bar which he was holding in his back pocket and then the choclate bar melted melt. That also was a clue that microwave ovens were possible.

In 1947, the first commercial microwave oven hit the market at $5,000 each. It was over 5 feet tall and weighed 750 lbs. Sometime between 1952-55, Tappan introduced the first home model priced at $1295.
Who invented the microwave? Huh? That's like asking who invented water or sunshine. Microwaves are radio waves with wavelengths that range from about one meter to as short as one millimeter, with frequencies between from 300 MHz to 300 GHz. If you're asking who invented the microwave oven, it was Dr Perry Spencer, after accidentally discovering that microwaves can heat food. In 1945 he was an engineer working for Raytheon, working on a radar set that used high power microwaves, and noticed the Mr Goodbar in his pocket started to melt. The first food to be purposely cooked by microwaves was popcorn, and later on an egg, which exploded in the face of someone helping him. He later fed microwaves from a magnetron into into a metal box and saw that it heated food rapidly. Raytheon filed a patent for the microwave cooking process on October 8, 1945.
When he was testing radio transmission using microwaves, he observed that one of his chickens was cooked to perfection. He realised that this was a very energy efficient way of heating things so he thought that he would put it to good use.

Dr. Percy Spencer, invented the first microwave, sort of by accident. He was testing a new vacuum tube (magnetron), and noticed his candy bar melted. He put some popcorn around later, and soon, popcorn popped all over his lab. After that, he got a raw egg, then placed it near the magnetron. The rapid increase of temperature caused the egg to be cooked inside out. The egg exploded. He invented the first microwave oven.
Percy l. Spencer had a choclate bar and when he turned on the magnetron and he felt a sizzling sensation and when he took out the choclate bar it melted complrtely
An engineer named Percy Spencer, who was involved with the construction of magnetrons for use in radar. (A magnetron is the microwave generating part of a microwave oven.) He worked for Raytheon, and when he found a melted chocolate bar partially melted in his pocket, he deduced that leaking microwave energy was the cause. To test his theory, he put food in a metal box and microwaved it, and it heated up very quickly. On the 8th of October, 1945, Raytheon filed for a patent, and the microwave oven was born.

In the spring of 1946, Percy Spencer and an associate, P.R. Hanson (Roly Hanson), commenced the development of utilising a magnetron by trapping its microwaves in a metal box causing it to heat food rapidly.
