∙ 15y agoBlackpool lights first shone in 1879 when the resort became the first town in Britain to have electric street lighting. Eight arc lamps were used and were described as artificial sunshine. The closest to the present day illuminations took place in 1912 when the first royal visit to Blackpool took place, by Princess louise.
