Dynamite consists of three parts nitroglycerin, one part diatomaceous earth and a small admixture of sodium carbonate.

Nitroglycerin was already know as an explosive but it was very unstable, Nobel's contribution was to make nitroglycerin stable by the addition of the other two substances.
