Jackson became a national hero in the War of 1812 with his great victory at New Orleans. Before that he served as leader in wars with Indians and led the army into Spanish Florida to stop raids into the US by escaped slaves and Indians who lived there. This military action eventually led to the US annexation of Florida.
In peace time he was a lawyer and a judge for many years including a term in the state Supreme Court and US Senator from Tennessee on two occasions as well as serving in the lower House. He also owned and operated a store for awhile, bought and sold land and ran his plantation with slave labor.
Andrew Jackson's jobs that were prior to his presidency were:
Military commander
Soldier
A Teacher
Governor of Florida
The Senate of Tennessee
A Judge
an Attorney
a Prosecutor

a planter
He was famous for his career as general, but he probably earned most of his money as the owner of a large plantation and in various business deals. In earlier years, he was a successful lawyer, public prosecutor , judge ,and public official, having served in the US Congress in both houses.
The big event that made him a national hero was his amazing victory over a superior British force at New Orleans in Jan. 1815. His decisive defeat of the Creeks in the Creek war was another big event, so far as advancing his path to the Whitehouse.
