Her abolitionist novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin, exposed the institution of slavery in a light that was sympathetic to the slaves depicted.
Harriet Beecher Stowe was from a family of antebellum abolitionists. She opposed slavery throughout anywhere it existed in the United States. In 1851, Ms. Stowe began to conceive of a novel that exposed the evils of slavery. It was not an anti-southern book. She saw slavery as far north as Delaware, hardly a southern state. Her focus also included the complicity of Northern people who did nothing about slavery or worse, to her, people that were totally indifferent with the institution that existed before they were even born. Her novel was Uncle Tom's Cabin. Literary critics panned it as "too melodramatic". The book first appearing in serial form in newspapers was finally condensed into a book. She also brought into the picture how Christianity was also complicit in the slavery issue.
Her novel became a best seller. It drew national attention to the issue of slavery. Since, as mentioned earlier, she blamed the entire nation for slavery, it was not designed to pit the North against the South. It had nothing to do with secession, it had everything to do with what was right.
The questions speaks about "increased tension". There was none, it was a symbol instead for US citizens to think about and ponder the issue.

the book: Uncle Toms Cabin by: Harriet Beecher Stowe
"Uncle Tom's Cabin" by Harriet Beecher Stowe is often credited with increasing tension between abolitionists and supporters of slavery in the years leading up to the Civil War, rather than directly causing the war itself. The book's powerful portrayal of the cruelty of slavery and its impact on readers' moral conscience helped to galvanize anti-slavery sentiment in the North and provoke a stronger defense of the institution in the South, contributing to the growing divide that ultimately led to the outbreak of the Civil War.

Because of centrifugal force tension on both side will be increased but at the same time normal reaction force in between belt and pulley surface will goes down so frictional tension will be decrease and ultimately power transmission efficiency will decrease.
When a string, cable, or other elongated object is under increased amounts of tension, it will vibrate at a correspondingly higher frequency. In terms of sound, as you tighten your guitar string, the pitch goes up.
The woman was Harriet Beecher Stowe, who wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin. President Abraham Lincoln described her as the little woman that started this great war, meaning the Civil War. (I am not sure of the exact quote, but this is close to it.) This book fueled the tension between the North and South, and along with other events, eventually led to the Civil War.
