AnswerIndiana Jones, Fictional Adventurer

* Born: 1981

* Birthplace: The Movies

* Best Known As: Star of Raiders of the Lost Ark

Indiana Jones first appeared in the 1981 movie Raiders of the Lost Ark and went on to become an enduring hero of movies, TV and video games. As played by Harrison Ford, Jones was an intrepid, fist-fighting archaeologist who wore a fedora and carried a bullwhip while racing the Nazis to unearth the lost Ark of the Covenant. The movie was the brainchild of George Lucas (who first dreamed up the character) and Steven Spielberg (who directed). Ford starred in two sequels: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989, with Sean Connery as Indiana's dad). An episodic television series, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, ran from 1991-93; it starred Sean Patrick Flanery as the teenaged Jones and Corey Carrier as the very young Jones. Lucas announced in December of 2006 that a fourth film in the series, once again starring Harrison Ford as Jones, would be released in May of 2008.

Jones's full name is Henry Jones, Jr.... Ford had earlier starred in the Lucas films American Graffiti (1972) and Star Wars (1977)... The original movie spawned a brief public craze for fedoras and the "Indiana Jones look"... Spielberg's wife Kate Capshaw co-starred in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom... Reportedly Jones got his name from a dog, Indiana, owned by George Lucas and his then-wife Marcia.

Indiana Jones is the iconic main hero of a popular series of adventure movies from the 1980s:

- Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

- Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)

- Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)

The films are set during the late 1930s and have Indiana Jones travelling to exotic locations and fighting off various soldiers and "henchmen." (And he never travels alone: Jones is always in the company of some beautiful young woman!) All the while, Jones is questing for certain religious artifacts, each of which is revealed to have dangerous mystical powers!

The character's full name is Dr. Henry Jones, Jr. ("Indiana" is a nickname which he took for himself), although he is referred to as "Indy" by his friends, "Dr. Jones" by his colleagues and simply "Jones" by his enemies. He is a well-liked college professer as well as an avid archaeologist.

The man's most iconic features are his leather jacket, his fedora hat, his brown leather bullwhip, and his trusty revolver!

The character of Indiana Jones was created by George Lucas (the Star Wars guy).

A good friend of Lucas, Steven Spielberg, directed all three original Indiana Jones films, and Indiana Jones, himself, was played by actor Harrison Ford.

After the success of the first three films, the adventures of Dr. Jones expanded to multiple mediums: there were novels written, comic books, several Video Games...even a pinball machine! George Lucas, himself, even produced a moderately successful television show which followed Indiana Jones as a young man.

The "Indiana Jones adventure" format was so popular that it directly influenced the creation of many future film-, TV- and video game characters; such include the American adventurer Rick O'Connell (of "The Mummy" film-remake series) as well as the largely-forgotten female adventurer played by Tia Carrere in the TV show "Relic Hunter."

Speaking of which, the adventures of Lara Croft in the "Tomb Raider" series were directly inspired by the Indiana Jones movies; some might even call Croft a "rip-off" of Indy! (The next-gen console adventure game series "Uncharted" also owes its existence to Dr. Jones.)

Finally, the year 2008 saw the release of a long-awaited fourth installment to the Indiana Jones feature film series. Although the making of the film involved the same three people (Lucas, Spielberg and Ford) who brought us the original three films, this most recent movie just doesn't live up to its predecessors.

In fact, it's awful! It hardly even works as a stand-alone film!

Needless to say, it was a major disappointment for longtime fans of the series, and many (myself included) are disowning the film and pretending it "simply never happened!"

So if you're not yet familiar with Indiana Jones, please DO NOT let "The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" be your introduction! Watch the originals first (start with "Raiders", it's the best!) and save the Skull for last (or better yet, just don't ever watch that one!) ;)
