Hundreds of people had their careers ruined, and although the witch-hunts would have probably happened without McCarthy, he became the most visible figure of it. After McCarthy tried to look for subversive figures in the Army, they retaliated by exposing much of his tactics. In 1954, the Senate agreed to give his a censure - a formal reprimand. By the time he died of a liver illness in 1957, he was disgraced and had turned to the drink.
