It's important to note that the sacrifice was NOT 'for Jesus', but for Mary, the mother.

Any woman who'd just given birth was to remain unclean for 40 days, when the child was a boy (it would have been 80 days for a girl). (Leviticus 12:1-8). And there were two sacrificesrequired to make atonement for the sins of the mother. A 'turtle dove' would be acceptable as a sin offering, but, unless the family was very poor, a 'young ram' was required for the burnt offering(Leviticus 12:6-8).
