If you are thinking that they sacrificed their son you would be wrong, for He gave up his life voluntarily. No doubt they made the same sacrifices that all parents make for their children.
Another answer:You may be thinking of Luke 2:22-24 - Now when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were completed, they [Joseph and Mary] brought Him [Jesus] to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, "Every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord"), and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, "A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons." [NKJV]
-First; your question is ambiguous; it implies the answer must be based on personal sacrifice for a newborn. Mary had more than one child.
-I am going to assume you mean "a tangible religious offering made on behalf of their newborn son Jesus".
ANSWER: TWO DOVES OR TWO YOUNG PIGEONS.
Luke 2:22-24 When the time of their (Mary only) purification according to the Law of Moses had been completed, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, "Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord"), 24 and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: "a pair of doves or two young pigeons."
Jump to 2:39 and you get your answer that this Law of the Lord had been completed: When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth.
Misconception: No offering or purification ritual was made in Bethlehem FOR OR TO Jesus, it only applies to Mary and her post birth uncleanliness. Jesus was only circumcised in Bethlehem. The word "their" can only be assumed to mean the whole family taking up the burden of Mary's purification and sacrifice.
Luke 2:22-24 - Now when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were completed, they brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, "Every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord"), and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, "A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons." Additional thought:
It's important to note that the sacrifice was NOT 'for Jesus', but for Mary, the mother.
Any woman who'd just given birth was to remain unclean for 40 days, when the child was a boy (it would have been 80 days for a girl). (Leviticus 12:1-8). And there were two sacrificesrequired to make atonement for the sins of the mother. A 'turtle dove' would be acceptable as a sin offering, but, unless the family was very poor, a 'young ram' was required for the burnt offering(Leviticus 12:6-8). Joseph and Mary were apparently quite poor as they offered 'two turtledoves'. (Atonement Sacrifices: Leviticus 4:26/Leviticus 5:7/Leviticus 6:7/Numbers 15:25)
A pair of doves or two young pigeons (Luke 2:24)
