The winner, architect Robert Mills, was well-qualified for the commission. His original design included a colonnade around the base. However, this was omitted during the lengthy and costly construction phase.
The Washington Monument was made to commemorate George Washington as a military leader in the US War of Independence and the first US President. It was created by Robert Mills a man from Charleston.

The memorial, completed in 1922, was designed by Henry Bacon. The huge sculpture of Lincoln was carved by Daniel French Smith with the assistance of the sons of noted stonecarver Ferruccio Piccirilli.
