What did Sherlock Holmes wear and how did Dr. Watson describe him?

Sherlock Holmes usually wore a collared shirt, a hat that looked some what like a top hat. Deerstalker hat, small top hat, or bowler hat, a hand woven tie, frock coat, trousers, Wellington dress shoes or boots, and, being the gentleman that he was, often seen with a cane or walking stick. The usual standard attire of the Victorian Londoner. Evening wear, top hats, dressing gowns, etc. etc.

Sherlock Holmes is most famous for his Inverness (the cape-like coat he wore) and his deerstalker (the hat). The Deerstalker cap and Inverness cape are travelling clothes, and, as such, were only depicted by Sidney Paget when Holmes was travelling. They have since been given disproportional importance by later actors.

A little more...Holmes was a gentleman of the Victorian era. As such he had to dress a certain way. The drawings taken from The Strand magazine show Holmes in evening clothes and top hat, a derby, and most often a suit. In The Final Problem, Holmes was mountaineering, and wore appropriate clothing.

In disguise, of course, his appearance was far more varied.

Well, the common conscience is that he wore a deerstalker. But that is never mentioned in the canon. The myth came about because of Sidney Paget (the original Sherlock Holmes illustrator) liked to wear deerstalker caps and he thought he'd give it to Holmes in his drawings. Most likely Holmes wore a top hat, something like top hat, with a smaller top and wider brim, whenever he was out, though I will forever think of him in a deerstalker when he travels.

As an avid reader of the series myself and a great obsessor of the Victorian era, I would believe Sherlock Holmes to be dressed in a shirt, plain, wrinkled, with a dark waistcoat (vest) and matching jacket. His black pants would be held up by suspenders while his shoes would be polished to perfection. I assume his hair would be set to the requrement of dress (fancy or everyday). Slight correction Holmes is depicted in a deerstalker cap in 'The Boscombe Valley Mystery' and 'Silver Blaze' by Sidney Paget for in both of these stories he and Watson had to travel a distance. This makes sense because the deerstalker was a travelling cap. Check the links below.

Depends on which story you're talking about, but Holmes typically dressed "humbly", as Watson puts it, and when he's not in public he wears a "mouse-colored dressing robe". He is described as hawk-like in his features, and he has a long profile, a wide forehead, and beady black eyes. His figure is lean, but we're told he's stronger than he looks.
