The exact cause of the explosion tends to vary from story to story; sometimes it's natural (the people who write comic books tend not to be scientists, and apparently think that planets just explode sometimes because why not) and sometimes it's caused by the people living there doing something "unenvironmental" (see above parenthetical comment).
