Tolkien incorporates rich world-building, detailed mythos, linguistics, and vivid descriptions of landscapes and creatures in his writing. He also employs allegory, thematic depth, and a mythic storytelling style to create a sense of depth and complexity in his works.

If you mean "what is Tolkien's genre" (that is to say, the literary category into which his writing falls), then the answer would be high fantasy. Tolkien is widely considered to be the pioneer of this genre: his work was unprecedented, and may never be equalled.

If, on the other hand, you are asking about his actual writing style, that is a different question, because there can be many different writing styles within one genre.

Tolkien's writing style can be characterized as elegant and graceful, "old-fashioned" in that it harks back to earlier English styles. Tolkien's Oxford education, and his linguistic studies (he was a philologist--one who studies the origins of languages) brought him into contact with the classic literary works of Old and Middle English, as well as Modern; and the influence of these works can be seen in his writings.
