In Chapt 34 of Tom Sawyer it states that "The money was counted. The sum amounted to a little over twelve thousand dollars."This is the dollar amount of the gold at whatever exchange rate was current. Without knowing the value of gold per ounce at the time, its mass of the gold is not known. Today that would be about 12 ounces, at that time with gold at about $20/oz it would be 600 oz/ Present value would be over a million (2017) dollars US
