For all their propriety the Victorias like their entertainments to include a bit of mystery.

At most society functions you would find people who would read your fortune in the tea leaves, the fall of dice, the lines of your hand, or the bumps on your head.

It was not uncommon for a hostess to hire a "gypsy" for an evening to gaze into a crystal ball, lay out the Tarot, read flames or pour wax or oil into water to read your future.

Many young men could trace the lines of a young lady's palm and give her a "glimpse into the future". In truth I think that was more a ruse to get to hold a lady's hand in a society that was very repressive.

Why do religious people condemn fortune tellers?

People, whether or not they are religious, may condemn fortune tellers if they believe that fortune tellers are taking advantage of gullible people.Religious people have two further concerns. If people can really tell fortunes without any help from the clergy, then the church loses control of our spirituality. Furthermore, if fortune tellers can not really tell fortunes they might still turn people away from the church. These are good reasons for the faithful to be warned to avoid fortune tellers, and to condemn fortune tellers.
