Highlights of the Taft administration
Payne-Aldrich tariff of 1909- lowered the overall tariff rate from 46% to 41%, but increased the tariff on coal, iron ore and animal hides. Mann-Elkins Act of 1910- extended the authority of the ICC to set railway rates; placed telephone and telegraph companies under ICC supervision. Dollar Diplomacy- urged Sec. of State Knox to promote American business interests abroad. He sent US marines to Nicaragua to crush a rebellion there in 1912. Antitrust Actions - dismantled Standard Oil and the American Tobacco Company in 1911. Webb-Kenyon Interstate Liquor Shipments Act of 1913 - passed over Taft's veto- banned the shipping of liquor into and through dry states. 16 amendment ratified - 1913- allowed a tax on incomes.
He stayed in the White House and concentrated on his duties as President. He did very little campaigning, probably because he did not believe he had much chance to win after Roosevelt began his third party campaign against him.
