The Zouaves were one of the many new Union regiments formed on the outbreak of war. These often had exotic names and uniforms. The first pitched battle of the war, Bull Run, saw these units marching into battle in amateur style. After the humiliating defeat of that battle, the more conventional regmental structure was adopted.
The Zouave's was an adoption by US Colonel Elmer Ellsworth. He was the 22 year old founder of the Chicago Zouave cadets. The major impact of these units was to use the newer French drilling methods. The drilling by these troops added a new twist to drilling. Soldiers were able to move more quickly in that rigorous gymnastics were part of the training. As an aside, Ellsworth was the first Federal officer to be killed in the US Civil War.
