There was no official cause of death publicized.

That is a really good question. I have been searching around attempting to find out but there is not one shred of information about her death. One can only hope it wasn't drug or alcohol related. In El Dorado she appeared to be in excellent health and one could see that she was athletic from the way she climbed up on the wagon with John Wayne and again when she jumped off the wagon when they got to town.
