Patton graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point, NY in 1909 and began serving in the army. After thirty-one years of distinguished service he became a general in October, 1940. During WWI, when he commanded the first US armor, the Tank Corps, Patton reached the temporary rank of colonel. As soon as the war was over and the millions of wartime civilian-soldiers discharged, Patton was reduced to his permanent rank of captain, and had to slowly work his way up, like all other officers. The government spent very little on the military for twenty years after WWI, and it was very small, with only a few places at the top. Pay was low, but Patton came from a wealthy family and had married money, so he stayed in, because he loved the army.
