As rationing ended after the war in 1952, the British diet became more varied as fridges and freezers began to take residence in more homes and the high employment rates meant that people had more disposable income and therefore more money to spend on food.
People tended to binge on the foods that had been heavily rationed during the war e.g. sugar, so sweets and cake were much sought after. As well as this, a bigger variety of fruit and veg were available e.g the introduction of the tomato.
