-drinking contaminated water with feces(that's the only thing they had)

-they had to face the ultimate question of "Will I live to see another day".

-they had injuries from shrapnel and bullets(pain)

-there were dead bodies half berried or just next to them.

-the weather was stormy and rainy, so the trenches were constantly muddy and filthy.

-they had to face seeing many people die everyday

-they had to face the enemy everyday depending on which part of the army the soldier was in.
