The American Flag in 1770 had similar distinctions to the flag today. The red and white stripes remained with 7 red stripes and 6 white stripes. In the top left corner, in the blue box were 13 stars in the shape of a circle, centered in the blue box.

The 1861 American flag had seven red stripes and six white stripes. In the rectangle blue box in the upper left hand corner were 34 stars, five rows down and seven rows across (the third row down only had six stars).

well it looked like it had a circle of 13 stars and had 13 strips. Red and white where the color of the flag of course.

Alternate answer:

Actually, there is no evidence that the stars were arranged in a circle during the Revolution, or that five-pointed stars were used.

The first US flag had 13 white stars on a blue field and 13 alternating red and white stripes both features representing the 13 original states. In 1795 after Vermont and Kentucky joined the USA two (2) more stars and two (2) more stripes were added. This flag is known as our "Star Spangled Banner" because it was flying over Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor in 1814 when the British ships were shelling and bombing the fort all night. And Francis Scott Key later penned the words to a poem "In Defense of Fort M'Henry" which eventually became our National Anthem.

After that 1795 flag, when other states joined the union stars were added but the original 13 stripes have remained unchanged to this day.
