What did the Confederates fight for?

The defense of their country (the Confederate States of America). They removed themselves from the United States because they were being severely taxed with very little representation in the house and felt that their rights were being infringed upon. After bickering within a northern controled congress for several years, they decided they could not find an acceptable solution and still remain in the Union. They removed themselves from the United States in 1861, and retained national sovereignty for about 3 years until they were finally worn down by invading US troops.

The essence of the formation of the Confederate States of America was to become an independent country. That goal most Southerners could agree upon. Other goals of the statesmen and military people were secondary to the goal of independence.

The Confederacy was fighting for its independence from the USA. It believed that the North and the Federal government were bent on taking away their constitutional rights.The CSA fought first and foremost for states' rights. After that came slavery. The Southern people did not believe that a strong National government was in their best interest. This was shown when the CSA was formed, giving the Confederate government little actual power. While slavery was a hot button issue, in reality it had little to do with the start of the War. In fact, President Lincoln only issued the Emancipation Proclamation in response to political pressure from his only party.

With an additional opinion and with all due respect, to the first answer, although the institution of slavery did not set off the US Civil War, with a good degree of certainty, it can be said that if slavery did not exist in the US, it's doubtful that taking up arms for the purpose of states' rights would have inflamed the conflict as it did.
