It didn't. During the First World War Imperial Germany's colours were actually red, white and black and not red, yellow and black as they are today. St Kilda FC changed its colours to red, yellow and black, between 1915-22, so as to disassociate itself from Germany. Red, yellow and black were considered suitable replacement colours because they were the colours of the St Kilda Cricket club and also of Belgium, Australia's ally. Germany's current flag (red, yellow and black) was adopted during the Weimar period (1918-33) soon after the Kaiser adication at the end of the First World War. During the Nazi period (1933-45) the Swastika was the official flag of Germany. The Weimar flag (red, black and yellow) was readopted after the Second World War and remains the German flag to this day. I hope this answers your question Neil

Instead, Canadian military units commonly used the British Union Jack and the Red Ensign, which featured the Union Jack in the canton and the Canadian coat of arms on a red field. The Red Ensign was widely recognized and used by Canadians during the war, but it wasn't until 1965 that Canada adopted its official national flag, the Maple Leaf.
