After the Germans invaded Poland they renamed the area Auschwitz. They also destroyed several smaller settlements and towns like Birkenau around Oswiecim. The entire area where towns like Oswiecim and Birkenau were previously located became a network of labor camps controlled by the Germans all falling under the name Auschwitz.
