The Nez Perce, like the Lakota, spilt after multiple battles the US Military, some settled on the reservations, others chose to continue to live in the traditional ways. The ones who refused to surrender were chased by 2,000 Army regulars over 2,000 miles across four states and rough terrain. Eight-hundred of their warriors were killed or taken prisoner during conflicts that sprung up along the route. Three hundred US Army and 1,000 Nez Perce civilians also perished. On October 5, 1877, after near the Canadian border. Chief Joseph surrendered to General Howard, US Cavalry in Montana just south of the Canadian border. The route of the Nez Perce flight is preserved by the Nez Perce Historic Trail.
