The Roman army on the march must have been an awesome sight. Not only was a legion of roughly 5,000 men moving, but there could be two or three legions moving out at the same time. The men were lined up in marching formation and were led by their standards and the legion eagle. The precise order of the march depended upon where they were, where they were going, and what their objective was. The very basic marching formation was the infantry in the center and the cavalry either in the rear or split off to the sides of the main body of troops. Again, this depended upon the terrain and the reasons mentioned above. The baggage train brought up the rear with a cohort or two assigned to march behind it in order to guard it. The infantry walked, the cavalry rode and the officers either rode horses or even traveled i n a carriage like Julius Caesar.

At the end of the day's march, the legions would build a camp. The camp building by the Romans was set up in a distinct manner and left the soldiers in position to break camp in an orderly manner and proceed with their march.
