In the Chinese civil war, the communists had a superior strategy of guerrilla warfare, ability to win the hearts of and extract resources (as well as intelligence) from the people in the countryside and better discipline in the party. The nationalists over-spread their forces, concentrated on holding important cities (to which they were later surrounded, their weapons being taken by the communists and troops being assimilated to the Red Army). The nationalists had weapons and equipment from the US, but they failed to use them effectively; the communists had equipment taken from the defeated Japanese in the north (as well as the nationalists). The nationalists mis-administered areas under their control, alienating most of the population, resulting in corruption and having huge inflation.
Mao had won the support of China's huge peasant population.
Nationalist's popularity had dropped alongside the above.
The people hoped the Communists would build a new China and end foreign domination.
The communist party, led by Mao, defeated the Nationalists, led by Chiang Kai Shek in 1949. Mao and his party won all of mainland China, and Chiang and the Nationalists fled to Taiwan (where it is still a separate country to this very day, known as Chinese Taipei).

For nearly twenty-five years. the conflict between Chinese Communists and Chinese Nationalists waged until finally, in 1950, Mao Zedong and his Communist forces achieved supreme control of China. They managed to win this epic conflict through their own outstanding organization and persistence, along with important material support from the Soviet Union. At the same time, the Nationalists' corruption, disorganization, and apathy towards the common folk of China were critical factors, as well.

To be put simply, Mao could not win the support of America due to China being communist and America wanting at all costs not to become Communist, so they pulled out all contact with China. Even during the civil war in China, America was supporting the Nationalists, as they were that desperate for China not to become a communists country.

Mao Zedong and the Chinese Communists took control of China, creating what we now know as the "People's Republic of China". The Nationalists were pushed out of China, and created their own country: now known as Taiwan.
