People were scared and they had no idea what to do. The doctors were telling them it would be best to close all your windows so the infected air can't get in. It turns out the way to avoid it was to do exactly the opposite. People needed fresh air.
They had an awful time trying to figure out the causes (never did). Some thought it was punishment from God while others placed blame using superstition If they couldn't explain something they used superstition to explain it (some people still do that today). All they knew is that when it got towards the summer months and hotter that the plague broke out. They never did put it together that it was caused by something in the environment.
